Municipal Library in Kolín
competition proposal 2024
The new Kolín Library is conceived not only as a place for storing and lending books, but as a modern cultural centre that respectfully engages with its urban surroundings.
Unlike traditional libraries, which often appear reserved or introverted, the building invites a broad spectrum of visitors inside through its blend of diverse functions. The ground floor continues the rhythm of the street: a café, multifunctional hall, and small retail units create a seamless transition between interior and exterior. A transparent façade enhances the visual continuity between the library and the surrounding cityscape.
The second floor offers a slower, more contemplative atmosphere in contrast to the activity of the ground level. It houses the main library collection with open shelving, individual study areas, and informal seating — an open-plan space structured by a regular grid of bookshelves.
At the top of the building, a flexible gallery space faces the main square, while part of the flat roof serves as a publicly accessible terrace. Together, these functions activate the public realm and integrate the library naturally into the everyday life of the neighbourhood.
The central architectural element is a staircase set within a bright, top-lit atrium — a strong vertical gesture that connects the floors both physically and visually. The material palette combines natural, long-lasting materials with soft pastel tones. The spaces are enriched by adaptable textile elements and curated art installations. Carefully designed daylighting and artificial lighting, acoustic comfort, and a healthy indoor climate are integral parts of the concept.
In the case of the Kolín Library, the books themselves shape a changing visual identity of the interior and help define its character. The design affirms that even in the digital age, a library can remain a vibrant cultural and architectural anchor for the city.
